So, What is Bánh Mì?

Throughout various historical periods, bánh mì has become a culinary gem in Vietnam. Its deliciousness does not come from high-end ingredients; rather, the beauty of Vietnamese bánh mì lies in its unique and special flavors, created from simple, familiar ingredients. The recipe for the filling is not fixed, allowing for endless creativity, with various components added based on regional or individual taste. Northerners often prefer bánh mì filled with pâté, Vietnamese pork sausage, eggs, sliced cucumbers, cilantro, scallions, and topped with meat sauce or even dried beef for the younger generation.

In contrast, Southerners tend to enjoy the rich flavors of salt and pepper combined with the creamy taste of homemade mayonnaise. A bánh mì might consist a spread of pâté and homemade mayonnaise, a few slices of pork sausage, cold cuts, fermented carrot and pickled vegetables, and final touch of salt and pepper to enhance the flavor. Meanwhile, in Central, people enjoy smaller, denser bánh mì with less fillings and many types of sauces.

Throughout history and localization, many versions of bánh mì have been created such as:

- Bánh mì chả cá: Deliciously fragrant fish cakes are fried to a golden crisp and paired with a sweet and sour fish sauce. Then served with fresh Vietnamese cilantro, cucumber and hot pepper stuffed inside a hot, crunchy baguette, it’s simply fantastic.

- Bánh mì thịt nướng: The filling for this bánh mì is made from marinated and grilled pork. It is often served with sweet and sour fish sauce and cucumbers. You can easily detect it on almost every street in Saigon, where vendors sell it from carts that are filled with enticing smoke.

- Bánh mì xíu mại: This dish is prepared with meatballs and homemade potato sauce. You can feel the tenderness of pork combining with the sourness from tomato and secret ingredients in the sauce itself. It’s sure to charm dish of all ages.

- Bánh mì ốp la: This is perfect for egg lovers. This version combines the rich, buttery flavor of fried eggs with the refreshing crunch of cucumbers. Just that alone is enough to satisfy a hungry belly.

- Bánh mì heo quay: This is served with finely sliced crispy roasted pork , scallions, cilantro, a few slices of cucumber, chili rings, and a sweet and salty roasted pork sauce, giving it a very Saigon-style twist.

My Favorite Recipe

I have always loved a good Bánh Mì sandwich, there are so many variations to try and I enjoy taking the time to try them. Throughout history and localization, many versions of Bánh Mì have been created such as:

- Bánh mì thịt nướng ("ban mee tit noong", thịt nướng means grilled meat): The filling for this bánh mì is made from marinated and grilled pork. It is often served with sweet and sour fish sauce and cucumbers. You can easily detect it on almost every street in Saigon, where vendors sell it from carts that are filled with enticing smoke.

- Bánh mì xíu mại ("ban mee siu my", xíu mại refers to meatballs): This dish is prepared with meatballs and homemade potato sauce. You can feel the tenderness of pork combining with the sourness from tomato and secret ingredients in the sauce itself. It’s sure to charm dish of all ages.

The irresistible appeal and rising popularity of bánh mì in Toronto

While doing more research on bánh mì and its benefits for consumers, I cannot agree more with Richie Assaly—the author of the article "Toronto is swamped with overpriced sandwiches, but this $5 bánh mì is my favourite downtown lunch hack" posted on the Toronto Star last week. The article effectively describes the charming appeal of Bánh Mì Nguyen Huong, a beloved sandwich location in Toronto's Chinatown, while successfully highlighting its unbeatable value in a city where dining out has become increasingly expensive after the pandemic. Richie has drawn readers' attention to bánh mì's irresistibly delicious taste - "bánh mì is made by slathering savory pâté and creamy mayonnaise on a fresh white roll and topping it with layers of barbecued meat or cold cuts, pickled vegetables, and spicy chili sauce. To quote the late Anthony Bourdain, it is a "symphony in a sandwich." With his precise description, readers quickly crave trying bánh mì.

According to the author, what differentiates Bánh Mì Nguyen Huong apart is its taste, efficient service, and fast-paced preparation process. On top of that, its incredibly affordable price also plays a key winning factor. At just $5.50, it provides a healthy, satisfying meal at an unbeatable price, especially in downtown Toronto, where lunch options can easily cost $15 or more. This price makes Bánh Mì Nguyen Huong a perfect option for those seeking quality meals without breaking a leg.

The article also mentions the rising trend of bánh mì in Toronto, with more shops popping up around the city. Despite the modernization of the sandwich, Nguyen Huong continues to maintain its consistency and authentic flavor. Its popularity and loyal customers like Richie are evident evidence of this strategy.

I am thrilled and proud to read this article. Today, more and more Vietnamese dishes are making their way abroad and being embraced worldwide. In addition to Pho (beef noodle soup), Bánh Mì is gaining popularity for its delicious taste, healthy ingredients, and affordable price. I hope that one day, we can establish a Bánh Mì chain like McDonald's or Burger King, reaching even more people around the globe.

My favorite picnic spot

My family’s favorite picnic place is Ho Tram, a small seafront town in Vung Tau – Ba Ria Province, Vietnam. We really enjoy the un-commercial nature, sunset or sunrise on the beach, fresh seafood cooked with local taste, and the nearby hot Spring, Binh Chau. Ho Tram is located about 125 kilometers Southeast of our hometown, Ho Chi Minh City. There are several ways to get there. You can take the public bus, nap, or enjoy the sightseeing, and you will be there in no time. My family usually drives there because it gives us more flexibility.

From the center of Ho Chi Minh City, we drive toward Dong Nai bridge to Vung Tau intersection, then turn right onto the 51st Highway. In Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, we take 55th highway to Xuyen Moc. From there, depending on the hotel we have chosen, we will put in the map to get the direction to get there.
